Yes. A valid job offer supported by a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) adds 50 or 200 CRS points depending on the NOC TEER category, but it's not required. Yes, significantly. Maximum age points (110 for single candidates, 100 with a spouse) go to candidates aged 20-29. Points decrease gradually after 30, with a steeper drop after 35. By age 45, age points reach zero. This is why timing matters — every year of delay can cost points.

A Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) nomination adds 600 CRS points to your profile. This effectively guarantees an ITA in the next applicable draw, since 600 points pushes virtually any candidate above recent cutoffs. Provincial nominations are awarded by individual provinces based on their own criteria and labour market needs.

Yes. A Canadian credential of one or two years adds 15 CRS points, while a three-year or longer credential (or a Master's/doctoral degree) adds 30 points. These are in addition to the education points in the core factors section. The credential must be from a designated learning institution (DLI).

If your spouse or common-law partner is coming with you, the maximum core points drop from 500 to 460 — but your spouse's education, language, and Canadian work experience can add up to 40 points. A non-accompanying spouse doesn't affect your score. In some cases, you may score higher by listing your partner as non-accompanying if their qualifications are low.

IRCC typically holds draws every two weeks, though the schedule isn't fixed. Draw frequency and types can vary based on immigration targets and policy priorities. General draws, program-specific draws (CEC, FSW, FST), and category-based draws may each follow different rhythms.

Since 2023, IRCC can hold draws targeting candidates with specific attributes: French language proficiency, healthcare occupations, STEM fields, trades, transport, and agriculture. For English: IELTS General Training and CELPIP General. For French: TEF Canada and TCF Canada. You must take the specific versions listed — IELTS Academic, for example, is not accepted. Test results are valid for two years from the test date.

Minimum requirements vary by program. FSW requires at least CLB 7 (IELTS 6.0 in each skill). CEC requires CLB 7 for NOC TEER 0/1 jobs or CLB 5 for TEER 2/3. However, higher scores earn significantly more CRS points — CLB 9 (IELTS 7.0-8.0 depending on skill) or above is where the biggest point jumps happen.

Each IELTS skill converts separately. For example, Listening 8.5+ = CLB 10, Reading 7.0+ = CLB 10, Writing 7.5+ = CLB 10, Speaking 7.5+ = CLB 10. CELPIP is a computer-based test taken entirely in Canadian English, while IELTS General Training uses a mix of formats and international English accents. Neither is objectively easier — it depends on your comfort with the format. CELPIP scores map directly to CLB levels (CELPIP 7 = CLB 7), which makes conversion simpler. Many candidates take both and use whichever yields a higher CLB.

Yes, significantly. Strong French with strong English (CLB 7+ in both) earns up to 50 bonus CRS points. French alone (CLB 7+ without English) earns up to 25 bonus points. French proficiency also makes you eligible for French-language category-based draws, which typically have lower cutoffs. Even basic French can be worth pursuing.

Language test results are valid for two years from the date you took the test. They must be valid both when you submit your Express Entry profile and when you receive an ITA. If your results expire while you're in the pool, you'll need to retake the test and update your profile.

If your highest education was completed outside Canada, you need an ECA to claim education points in Express Entry. The ECA verifies that your foreign degree is equivalent to a Canadian credential. Without it, your education won't count toward your CRS score. Canadian degrees don't require an ECA.

IRCC accepts ECAs from: World Education Services (WES), International Credential Assessment Service (ICAS), Comparative Education Service (CES at U of T), Medical Council of Canada (MCC) for medical degrees, and Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada (PEBC) for pharmacy. WES is the most commonly used and typically the fastest.

WES typically processes ECAs in about 20 business days after receiving all documents. However, the total timeline depends on how quickly your institutions send transcripts and degree verifications to WES. Budget 2-3 months total from start to finish. ECA results are valid for five years.

Education points vary by credential level: a high school diploma gets 28-30 points, a one-year post-secondary gets 84-90, a two-year program gets 91-98, a Bachelor's or three-year program gets 112-120, two or more credentials (one 3+ years) gets 119-128, a Master's gets 126-135, and a Doctorate gets 140-150. The ranges depend on whether you have a spouse.

Express Entry accepts work experience in NOC TEER 0 (management), TEER 1 (professional), TEER 2 (technical/skilled trades), and TEER 3 (intermediate) occupations. Canadian work experience earns up to 80 points (without spouse) or 70 points (with spouse) in the core section: 1 year = 35-40 points, 2 years = 46-53, 3 years = 56-64, 4 years = 63-72, 5+ years = 70-80. Yes, part-time work counts if it adds up to the equivalent of full-time hours. IRCC defines full-time as 30+ hours per week. You can combine part-time hours: for example, 15 hours per week for two years equals one year of full-time experience. The work must still be in a qualifying NOC TEER category and be paid.

Self-employment generally does not count for Express Entry. IRCC requires that work experience be in a paid position, meaning you received wages or commission from an employer. Freelance work where you invoiced clients typically doesn't qualify. If you owned a business but paid yourself a salary, it may count — documentation is key.

PNPs allow Canadian provinces and territories to nominate immigrants who meet their specific economic needs.
