If you're a UK citizen with a Canadian job offer, the LMIA — the single biggest bottleneck in Canada's work permit system — just became optional for you. As of September 1, 2026, the CPTPP trade agreement is in force between Canada and the United Kingdom, and eligible British professionals can get a Canadian work permit without their employer proving no Canadian could do the job first.
What happened
Canada has completed ratification of the United Kingdom's accession to the CPTPP (the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership), and the agreement entered into force between the two countries on September 1, 2026. The UK originally joined CPTPP in December 2024 as its 12th member and the first European country to do so, but each existing member had to separately ratify the UK's accession before the trade benefits — including immigration provisions — applied bilaterally. Canada's ratification means UK citizens now qualify for the same LMIA-exempt work permit access that citizens of other CPTPP members (including Japan, Australia, and Mexico) already have.
On September 2, 2026, IRCC updated its operational instructions for the T52 work permit exemption code — the code used for professionals and technicians under CPTPP — to add a United Kingdom-specific occupation schedule.
Who qualifies
The T52 exemption covers several categories of UK citizens, but the professionals and technicians stream is the one most people will use:
Professionals and technicians. A confirmed Canadian job offer or service contract in an eligible occupation, plus the credentials the occupation calls for, lets a UK citizen skip the LMIA entirely. Coverage spans a wide range of TEER 0 and TEER 1 occupations — engineers across nearly every discipline, software developers, architects, financial managers, accountants, data scientists, cybersecurity specialists, and several marketing and business development roles.
One important limit: Canada's UK-specific schedule lists eligible professional occupations, but doesn't include a separate technician occupation list. If you're used to seeing CPTPP technician categories referenced for other member countries, don't assume the same list applies to UK citizens — check the UK schedule specifically before you or your employer plan around it.
Investors, intra-company transferees, and business visitors. The same ratification also extends LMIA-exempt access to UK citizens investing in a Canadian enterprise, being transferred within a multinational company's Canadian branch, or entering as short-term business visitors — mirroring the categories already available to Americans and Mexicans under CUSMA.
